Herbie Hancock is a musical genius. The pianist, bandleader, and composer has released more than 50 albums since his first solo recordings with Blue Note in 1962.
Icon Digital began working with Herbie Hancock in 2014 on a brand-new website.
We were given full creative latitude to redesign everything, down to the logotype.
We wanted to visually convey the spectacular breadth and depth of Herbie’s recording career & the diverse styles and genres of music he helped pioneer, from jazz-fusion to funk to hip-hop.
Icon Digital researched Herbie’s unparalleled creative output and designed an interactive biography section tracing Herbie’s musical life, from his first recording with Donald Byrd in 1961, “French Spice” – to his 2015 guest residency sitting in with The Roots on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ – via rich multimedia and parallax-animated graphic design elements.
We believe the extensiveness of this biography feature is unique among artist websites.
Icon Digital created 62 distinct pages of design proofs for the project. We consolidated the complex data in his archives and re-developed the information architecture to be more intuitive and intelligent.

The website launched in 2016 and has remained live for more than 8 years; a testament to the strength of its foundation.
